Adding something new to your daily routine can be challenging, but it’s helpful to know what the benefits of the change are or will be to help motivate you to make the change and make it “stick.”

With the strange times we are living in, it’s even more important that we realize the benefits of personal introspection and the release that can come from writing about our lives.

Journaling is older than the written word. Men and women have been tracking their lives and the events of their lives since cavemen were drawing crude pictograms on walls.

It’s literally in our DNA to draw, write, process, and document our journey through life. Some of this country’s most beloved treasures are the journals and real-life accounts written by the founding fathers and mothers of America. They provide a window into a time we can only imagine and prove to be quite valuable when examining them and comparing them to our current reality.

Whether you are plotting out a new business, planning a career move, processing your thoughts in a safe place, or creating a documentary of a specific journey, journaling is an effective way to sort through the events and emotions of your life and create new outcomes.

Explore the possibilities – Journaling creates a safe space to consider any and every idea that comes to your mind. Sometimes one of the best ways to manage the overwhelm of life, with all it’s myriad of inputs and information, is to empty your head of the thoughts, and ideas running through your mind. Writing down the information frees you up to let it go. The brain is no longer required to manage so much information, and it can provide a respite to a very busy mind.

Journaling your thoughts and dreams helps you to flex your imagination and fires neurons in the brain that expand ideas. Writing things out creates a space for ideas to come and be cataloged, recognized, and reported.

Then you can return later and add to the ideas, flesh out the details, or let them go if they no longer suit you. The simple act of asking yourself what if invites more possibilities to come. Writing the ideas that come to mind makes room for you to explore what it would take to manifest them and make them a reality.

Whether you are doodling your journal entries, bullet journaling, or writing longhand in a leather-bound book filled with empty pages, you are expressing yourself in a personal and unique way. No two journals are alike, just as no two people are alike, and there is great power in having an outlet to share whatever is on the forefront of your mind.

Expressing yourself also gives you a healthy outlet to manage the emotions of difficult times in your life. The activity of writing in a journal can be a way to recharge your batteries, release challenging emotions, and do some self-care. Journaling can give a pathway to a passion to write about, draw, or capture your biggest ideas when they have your full attention.

Remember what happened – Life is fleeting. What you are experiencing today is going to be a memory in a very short amount of time, and the busier our days become – the more “input” we receive – the more likely it is that experiences not written down or recorded soon fade away.

What you feel about your life – happiness, sadness, elation, or confusion -won’t always be the case, no matter how intense it feels in the moment. You won’t always be pregnant – with ideas or with a new addition to your family.

You won’t always be in the beginning stages of starting your business or a shallow focus photography of white flowersnew career or relocating to a new area of the country to chase new possibilities for your life. Journaling creates a timeline where you can live in the moment and reflect back in the future. Nothing is better than going back and revisiting who you were back then and recognizing how far you’ve come – how much you’ve grown and changed – and seeing that things really did work out for the best.

Being able to see how you worked through issues and made it is beneficial. One day your family may read your journal and have a new and profound understanding of who you were and what you were managing at different times of life.
